On the afternoon of August 28, Nie Hongyin and Sun Bojun, two researchers from the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, were invited to the School of Literature and made two reports entitled "The Definition of Characters and the interpretation of ancient Characters" and "The transformation of Chinese Dialects into"。The presentation was chaired by Professor Song Hongmin, head of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics of the Faculty of Arts. Leaders of the Faculty of Arts and teachers and students of related majors participated in the event。

Nie Hongyin takes the symbols on Banpo pottery as the starting point, draws out the definition of characters, and analyzes the shortcomings of the past definition by combining the examples of Gan Sang carved stone, Tibetan Uighur Uighur script and Poya Song book. Nie Hongyin suggests defining "characters" as written symbols that evoke readers' memory of speech。Afterwards, Nie Hongyin shared the interpretation methods of ancient Chinese characters for us。He believes that three conditions must be met for the interpretation of the "dead script" : first, there is a dictionary that translates the existing script with the known text at the same time;Second, there are a large number of cross-translation documents between this language and other languages;The third is to know the descendant language of this language。At the same time, he also listed Tibetan, Cuban and other languages to explain。

Later, Sun Bojun gave a lecture on the problem of the "fan style" change of Chinese dialect。She first introduced the method of phonology，The research situation of the academic circle is sorted out;Secondly, several examples of "Pan style" change reading are discussed in detail，Such as Khitan language, Mongolian language in the non-related character change reading，Variation of Altaic fine group characters，The variation of the Japanese character，The evolution of Chinese characters and the relationship between national languages;Finally, Sun Bojun made a summary on the role of national language in the judgment of cultural relics，It also shows the application of national language in the judgment of cultural relics with the example of six-character authentic words on the Feilai Peak。

With profound knowledge and broad vision, the two experts explained relevant issues by quoting classics and inspiring everyone, arousing the keen interest of teachers and students present and creating a warm atmosphere。Finally, Song Hongmin summed up the lecture and once again thanked the two experts for their visit and guidance。This report has important theoretical value and methodological significance, which not only enrichis everyone's understanding of the relationship between ethnic ancient characters and Chinese characters, but also brings inspiration for the academic research of teachers and students in the School of Literature。
